Great read and very timely! Really like the analogy and parallel the article cites in reference to the film “The Matrix” . This section brings it right into focus: “Agent Smith did not just execute instructions. He learned, replicated, and extended his own reach each time he encountered an exploitable condition. The threat compounded because the environment rewarded his expansion and nothing in the system was designed to contain it. What the directors did not anticipate, and could not have in 1999, was that the governance problem they were dramatizing would arise not from sentient machines pursuing their own interests, but from optimization systems pursuing task completion within environments that were never designed to contain the consequences. “
